Introduction

USE-IT Europe helps young local teams create beautifully designed paper maps featuring carefully selected spots and fun extras that reflect real local life. Despite the quality of these projects, changing tourist expectations and ongoing distribution issues led to a gradual decline in the number of partner cities, causing the organization to slowly fade. That’s why the DIG-IT project was launched: to bring USE-IT maps into the digital world while staying true to the community-driven values that make them special.

Problems & Challenges

Despite the unique and artistic value of USE-IT’s paper maps, several challenges have emerged, making digitalization necessary.

Limited map availability

Although the maps were full of character and valuable local insights, distribution was unreliable. Managed by volunteers, the maps were often difficult to find, making it hard for tourists to even discover the USE-IT brand in many cities.

Web-based map application

The main goal of the project was to digitalize the paper maps. In order to do that I was responsible for designing a web-based map application tailored to each city in the USE-IT network.

Wireframing to determine MVP functionality

I led the wireframing phase using a mobile-first approach, starting from existing research. We explored a wide range of UX ideas and functional concepts tailored to traveler needs. These ideas were reviewed during a project workshop, where we defined MVP priorities based on budget and long-term vision. At this stage, I didn’t focus on polished UI. Instead, I created a default UI layout that later served as a base for custom styling.

Backoffice design

A custom backoffice helps teams plan, organize, and build their digital city maps — from paper content to online experience.

End-to-end backoffice system for map creation

I was responsible for the full design of the backoffice - from early wireframes to the final UI, including a custom design system. The backoffice was built to support map creators in managing their paper maps, and to make the transition to digital maps smooth, structured, and user-friendly.
